Reporting of looting after Cyclone Ian

Police at Ha’apai on Tuesday 14th January, 2014 have arrested and charged 3 male between the age of 14-18 from Faleloa with housebreaking and theft following the Cyclone Ian that battered the Island Groups of Ha’apai on the 11th of January 2014.

Chief Inspector ‘Okusitino Peleki from the Ha’apai Police Station report that they received a complaint on Sunday 12 January, 2014 from the owner of Matafonua Lodge Darren Rice, after he returned to the Lodge and found out that around $190,10.00 of goods were stolen from the place.

Police conducted an investigation and arrested this 3 male accused and also seized some of the goods which they hid in the bushes while some of the goods which includes beers and alcohol they have already consumed them.

Investigations are still ongoing with report that there are more suspects who were involved in committing this crime.

Acting Police Commisisoner ‘Unga Fa’aoa urged those in Ha’apai who are thinking of Committing or continuing to commit this type of crime or any other crimes because of the Vulnerable State facing the Island, to desist as they will be facing prosecution when caught.
